Our Hope In The Darkness

How often do we look at a situation that seems dark, empty, and hopeless and get discouraged? Maybe you’ve felt like you’ve done nothing, accomplished nothing, or have nothing to show. The question, “God, what am I even waiting for?” plagues so many of us on our faith journey. But today, I have some good news for you.

In Genesis 1:2-3, we read that the earth was formless, dark, and empty. Imagine if God looked at the earth and saw it the way you might see your life or situation right now Reader—hopeless, not worth salvaging. But He didn't. Instead, the Spirit of God moved upon the waters, and then God spoke light into the darkness.

The Hebrew word for "move" here is rāḥap̄, which means to be relaxed, to cherish, and to be tender. Even in a seemingly dark and hopeless situation, the Spirit of God is present. He's there with us in our moments of darkness and feelings of hopelessness. God sees our nothingness and remains unshaken, relaxed, and still because He already has a plan in mind—a plan to protect and care for His children. He looks at things for what He knows they are, what He knows He can do and not for what they seem to be.

As followers of Christ, we must understand that without God, our efforts are like the earth without form—lacking purpose. But God transforms our nothingness into something beautiful and good.

He cherishes our emptiness, because, for Him, it’s an opportunity. An opportunity to show His love and care for us and for His spirit to move upon us. The same Spirit that moved over the waters in Genesis resides in us when we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, waiting for us to speak light into our lives.

So, take heart and know that God’s plan for you is already in motion. Just as He spoke light into the darkness, He brings light into your life too.

Reflect on a time when your emotions told you a situation was hopeless. How did God show up for you and bring light into that dark place?

Prayer

Lord we thank You that the darkness doesn't scare You. We thank You that in our dark places we were able to see You clearly because Your presence never leaves or forsakes us. We thank You that when we are empty before You, Your light can fill us—bringing purpose and peace.

Father, We pray that there will be light in our minds and our hearts that we may understand Your ways. That even when we can't see it we know You're working. Lord God, we know that we cannot judge our situation by appearance but we will trust in what You have said. We thank You for illuminating our path and making our way straight.

In Jesus' name

Amen

a black woman staring at a clock waiting

I can’t lie—sometimes I catch myself scrolling through Instagram, seeing people I grew up with—or even total strangers—getting exactly what they prayed for. And here I am… still wondering, still waiting. Did God forget about me? I know I heard Him clearly. I’m sure of His promises. But every time I get my hopes up, another day, another month, another year goes by. And I start to wonder: Am I running out of time? The first thing I had to realize is that time isn’t even a limitation in God’s...

God is giving you a fresh start

Recently, my aunt came to visit, and she brought along one of my favorite snacks—Popcorners. Excited, I tore open a bag, ready to dive in. But the first chip I bit into was stale. Disappointed but determined not to waste food, I kept eating, convincing myself that the other bag was probably stale too. I had resigned myself to the lackluster experience until a small voice nudged me, “Check the other bag.” Reluctantly, I did. To my surprise, the second bag was fresh, crisp, and every bit as...

How God mold and shapes us

In one of my videos, “Am I Lazy?”, I briefly shared about my battles with chronic pain—specifically from complications of the shingles virus. Contrary to popular belief, shingles isn’t just for the elderly. It can reoccur in unexpected ways and cause long-term damage. Recently, I experienced a flare-up, and with it, I found myself slipping mentally back into a dark place I thought I had left behind. A place I thought I was delivered from. But in the midst of my pain, God, in His infinite love...
